Automated relevance is not the same as an approved customer journey
Google Ads can now decide that a page elsewhere on your website is a better match for a person's search than the address you supplied in the ad. Google calls this Final URL expansion: an automated landing-page selection setting available in AI Max for Search and Performance Max.
A specific location, category or product page can help a buyer sooner. But relevance is not a complete commercial brief. A guide may answer the query without the right offer; a regional page may use an old price; a support page may attract existing customers.
My verdict: give automation permission to explore only after the business defines an approved commercial surface. Judge the test by accepted opportunities, customers or revenue—not by whether an automatically selected page produced more clicks or cheaper forms.
This is narrower than asking whether AI can manage paid advertising. Here the decision is which website journeys the system may create and continue funding.
Why this decision needs attention now
Google's September 2026 transition expanded the number of Search advertisers likely to encounter AI Max. Dynamic Search Ads are moving to standard ad groups with AI Max features, while campaigns using text customization—previously automatically created assets—are also being upgraded.
Final URL expansion requires text customization. Google may choose another page and generate text to match it. Advertisers can control the settings, exclude URLs and review automatically selected pages and generated assets.
The owner sets the business rules: eligible offers, forbidden pages, qualified outcomes and rollback ownership.
Start with the same discipline used to diagnose traffic without sales: keep the search, message, page, enquiry and downstream result connected. If the route cannot be reconciled, the campaign is exploring faster than the business can learn.
The Automated Journey Permission Gate
Before enabling or retaining automated page selection, ask six commercial questions.
Is this page built for paid demand?
Approve commercial pages; exclude careers, support, policy and outdated content.
Does the promise remain true?
Check price, geography, availability, audience fit and sales commitments.
Is the next step appropriate?
The page needs a useful action, proof and qualification path for the search.
Can routes be compared?
Record selected URL, enquiry receipt, lead quality and commercial progress.
What must never serve?
Protect regulated, legal, partner-only, account and brand-sensitive journeys.
Who can stop the route?
Name the reviewer, evidence threshold and action when a journey fails.
Google provides URL exclusions; tighter journeys can disable expansion and use selected pages. The right freedom depends on the site, offer and evidence.
The Search-to-Approved-Journey Control Loop
The gate decides whether a test is safe enough to begin. The loop keeps automation accountable after it starts.
Name the valid journey
Specify buyer, search problem, offer, page set and qualified outcome.
Open a bounded surface
Enable eligible sections and exclusions without changing every variable.
Read the whole route
Review query, generated message, selected page and conversion action.
Connect business outcomes
Match leads to sales acceptance, opportunity progress and customer value.
Remove bad journeys
Block unsuitable pages or generated assets while preserving the evidence.
Keep, narrow or stop
Continue only routes that improve qualified value without breaking the brief.
AI Max reporting links search terms, headlines and URLs, identifies automatically selected pages and marks customized text “Google AI.” It does not replace the CRM or sales record.
Review the route, not just the landing-page total
| Observed journey | Illustrative outcome | Owner question |
|---|---|---|
| Priority query → service page | 4 accepted opportunities | Does the page preserve the intended offer and qualification? |
| Priority query → detailed guide | 9 enquiries; 1 accepted | Is the route creating volume without suitable commercial intent? |
| Regional query → wrong location page | 3 rejected enquiries | Should the page, location or query be excluded? |
| Specific query → focused landing page | 3 accepted; 2 progressed | Does the route deserve more budget or a dedicated campaign? |
All values are synthetic. They illustrate why raw enquiry totals can reward the wrong page. Replace them with matched search, URL, conversion and sales records from your business.
If pages share one unqualified form event, repair conversion tracking and CRM feedback before declaring success.
When to allow, restrict or disable automated page choice
| Business condition | Recommended control | Evidence to review |
|---|---|---|
| Several current pages serve distinct, valid buyer needs | Run a controlled expansion test with exclusions | Selected URL, search-message fit, accepted opportunities and value |
| One approved page is the only valid conversion path | Disable expansion and preserve the fixed destination | Page completion, lead quality and journey integrity |
| The site mixes services, countries, prices or audiences | Restrict eligible sections before testing | Wrong-fit enquiries, location mismatch and sales rejection reasons |
| Automatically selected pages create more forms but weaker pipeline | Narrow or roll back the route | Sales acceptance, opportunity progress and customer contribution |
| Generated messages or pages breach an approved promise | Remove the asset or exclude the page immediately | Offer accuracy, policy, legal and brand review |
| The route cannot be linked to downstream outcomes | Repair measurement before increasing freedom | URL-level conversions, receipt, CRM source and mature sales outcomes |
For a new offer, use the guide to validating demand with paid ads. After the route is clean, use the advertising scale gate.
A 30-day controlled route test
Approve the surface
Inventory eligible pages, exclusions, offers, geographies and conversion actions. Confirm the rollback owner.
Observe clean journeys
Review search, generated message, selected page, enquiry receipt and sales acceptance without changing several controls at once.
Reconcile and decide
Keep, narrow or stop routes using mature business outcomes and documented exceptions—not platform averages alone.
Thirty days is a cadence, not a universal threshold. Low-volume B2B may need longer; an obvious wrong-location route can be excluded immediately.

Frequently asked questions
What is Final URL expansion in Google Ads?
It lets Google replace an ad’s specified landing page with another relevant page on the same domain. In AI Max for Search, text customization can also change the message to match the selected page.
Should every business turn Final URL expansion on?
No. Test it when several pages are commercially suitable, offers are consistent and outcomes can be compared by page. Restrict it when one approved journey must carry the traffic or unsuitable pages cannot be excluded reliably.
Can Google Ads send traffic to the wrong page?
Google says selected pages are query-relevant, but its Performance Max guidance warns that unintended pages can appear without careful exclusions. Relevance alone does not prove the page presents the right offer, evidence and action.
How do I see which landing pages Google selected?
AI Max reporting includes a landing-pages report with a ‘Selected by’ column and a view connecting search terms, headlines and URLs. Compare those routes with lead quality and opportunity progress.
When should I turn Final URL expansion off?
Turn it off or narrow it when pages are unsuitable, messages misrepresent the offer, routes cannot be measured, lead quality declines, compliance requires an approved journey, or one page is the only valid path.
Let the system explore only where the business can verify the route
Automated selection can shorten the path to a useful answer or create a journey the business cannot support. Define the approved surface, observe the route and keep only what produces defensible customer value.
