How can your business get mentioned in AI search results?

The short answer: earn the mention by publishing evidence an AI answer can safely use. Make priority pages accessible, answer specific buyer questions, identify the business and author clearly, support claims with sources or documented experience, and build consistent third-party corroboration. No schema, AI file or agency can guarantee citation.

AI mentions are an evidence problem before they are an optimisation problem

A founder asks an AI tool for the best provider in their category. Competitors appear. Their own company does not—even though the website ranks for several conventional searches.

The wrong response is to buy an “AI visibility package” that promises hundreds of question pages, special markup or manufactured recommendations. Those activities may produce more pages, but they do not give an answer engine stronger reasons to name the business.

An AI mention and an AI citation are related but different. A mention is when the answer names or describes the business. A citation is a visible source link supporting the answer. A company can be mentioned without its own website being cited, or cited for useful expertise without being recommended as a provider.

Google's generative AI guidance, updated 10 July 2026, says its AI features use core Search ranking and quality systems. It prioritises original, non-commodity content and warns against inauthentic mentions, special AI files and overreliance on structured data. Google's generative AI optimisation guide.

My verdict: choose the commercially valuable questions first, then build the strongest verifiable answer in your category. This guide is specifically about earning mentions and citations. The AI Citation Readiness System

I use six checks to decide whether a business has evidence worth retrieving and citing. Each check solves a different failure. Publishing more content before locating the failure usually creates overlap rather than authority.

Start with a question that can lead to a business decision

“What is marketing?” may attract attention, but it rarely helps a founder select a growth partner. “Should a B2B company invest in paid ads or SEO first?” carries a decision, trade-off and commercial next step. Map a small set of buyer questions to the service, evidence and conversion path they naturally support.

Do not create a separate page for every phrasing. Google says its AI systems can understand synonyms and related meanings, and warns that scaled pages created to manipulate generative responses violate its policies. One definitive page should own one distinct intent.

Turn expertise into evidence that can be checked

Generic advice is cheap to reproduce. A citation-worthy page adds something that was not available before: an original framework, a transparent calculation, first-hand practitioner judgement, a documented comparison, a clearly labelled illustrative model or approved case evidence.

Make the boundaries visible. State when a framework is Thomas's analysis, when an example is illustrative and when a claim comes from an external source. Link the author byline to real background—on this site, every Thomas Ho byline leads to Thomas's LinkedIn profile—and connect the article to the About page and evidence standards.

Use third-party presence as corroboration, not decoration

Awards nobody recognises, thin directories and paid “best company” lists create weak proof. Prioritise places buyers would independently trust: recognised professional profiles, relevant publications, customer reviews, partner listings and accurate business records. Keep the name, offer and core facts consistent, but do not copy one promotional paragraph everywhere.

Diagnose the AI visibility pattern before choosing the fix

Observed patternMost likely gapFirst owner decisionDo not assume
The business never appears and important pages are not indexedAccess or index eligibilityRepair crawl access, canonical signals, internal links and sitemap coverageMore articles will solve a technical block
The business appears but is described inaccuratelyIdentity or conflicting factsAlign the core site, author profiles and reliable external recordsAdding more schema will override contradictory copy
The website ranks, but competitors receive the citationsAnswer specificity or evidence depthStrengthen the definitive page with original judgement, sources and limitationsRanking for a broad term guarantees AI citation
The article is cited, but the company is not consideredWeak service connection or proofConnect expertise to the relevant offer, case evidence and next stepEvery citation carries commercial intent
The company is mentioned, but enquiries do not improveWrong questions or conversion pathPrioritise buyer questions and measure qualified outcomes, not mention count aloneAI share of voice equals pipeline

This is why AI citation work should not live in a reporting silo. It touches positioning, content, technical access, evidence and conversion. If traffic already exists but revenue is weak, diagnose the buying path with Why Website Traffic Is Growing but Revenue Is Not before chasing another discovery channel.

OpenAI says public websites can appear in ChatGPT search and advises publishers not to block OAI-SearchBot if they want content included in summaries and snippets. It also distinguishes that search access from GPTBot, the control used for potential model training. OpenAI's publisher and developer FAQ.

Technical eligibility is only the first checkpoint. The useful investment is in pages that help a real buyer decide, then in evidence the business can defend. Measure citations without confusing visibility with revenue

Bing launched AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools in public preview on 10 February 2026. It reports total citations, average cited pages, sample grounding queries and page-level citation activity across supported Microsoft AI experiences. Bing explicitly notes that citation count does not show placement, ranking or the importance of a page. Bing Webmaster Blog.

EligibilityCan priority pages be retrieved?

Index and crawler access are healthy for the pages that matter.

RepresentationIs the business described correctly?

Name, offer, audience and evidence remain accurate across answers.

Citation qualityAre the right pages supporting the answer?

Commercially relevant questions surface useful, defensible sources.

Business valueDo suitable buyers take a next step?

Referral visits, enquiries and pipeline are judged by fit—not volume alone.

Keep the question set stable enough to compare periods, but expect answers to vary by wording, user context, location and product. Treat the evidence as a trend, not a permanent “AI ranking.” No verified search volume was available for this topic; its priority is qualitative, based on owner intent, commercial relevance and the current SERP gap between technical guides and business decisions.

Frequently asked questions

How can I get my business mentioned in ChatGPT?

Make useful public pages accessible to OAI-SearchBot, answer specific customer questions, identify the author and business clearly, support material claims with verifiable evidence and earn accurate third-party corroboration. OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, but access and good evidence do not guarantee a mention or citation.

What makes a page more likely to be cited in AI search?

A strong candidate is directly relevant to the question, publicly accessible, easy to understand, specific, current and supported by evidence. Original analysis, documented experience, clear sourcing and an unambiguous author or business identity give an answer engine more useful material than a generic summary of existing advice.

Do I need special AI schema or an llms.txt file?

Not for Google AI features. Google says there is no special schema, AI text file or required content format for its generative search experiences. Structured data remains useful when it accurately describes visible content, but it cannot make an unsupported claim authoritative or guarantee inclusion.

Should I pay for mentions on directories and listicles?

Only when the placement is genuinely useful and editorially credible for your buyers. Buying low-quality listings or manufactured recommendations creates weak evidence and may introduce inconsistent claims. Google specifically advises against seeking inauthentic mentions to influence generative AI features.

How should a business measure AI search visibility?

Track a stable set of commercially relevant buyer questions, the business description, cited URL and referral or enquiry outcome. Use Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance for supported Microsoft surfaces, Google Search Console for Google generative AI performance, and ChatGPT referral URLs containing utm_source=chatgpt.com where available.

How long does it take to earn AI search mentions?

There is no reliable universal timeline. Technical access can be corrected quickly, but publication, indexing, independent corroboration and authority develop at different speeds. Review evidence monthly, make material improvements and judge progress across a question set rather than expecting one page or technical change to create an immediate result.

Build the answer your business can defend

Choose the buyer questions closest to revenue, publish original and verifiable answers, make the identity and evidence easy to retrieve, then measure whether citations create suitable demand. AI visibility is useful when it improves how buyers understand and trust the business—not when it merely increases a dashboard count.
