SEO, GEO & AI discovery

Does SEO still matter when AI answers the search?

The short answer: yes—but SEO should now earn visibility, trust and qualified demand, not just clicks. Keep investing in technical access, strong commercial pages and original evidence that search and AI systems can retrieve. Reduce generic content built only for traffic, and judge performance through buyer movement, citations and revenue contribution.

SEO is not disappearing; its job is changing

A CEO sees organic traffic falling while AI answers occupy more of the search page. The obvious conclusion is that SEO has stopped working.

That conclusion mixes two different questions. The first is whether search still shapes how buyers discover, compare and validate businesses. The second is whether the old model—publish generic articles, rank for broad questions and count every visit as success—still deserves investment.

The first answer is yes. The second is often no.

Google stated on 15 May 2026 that SEO best practices remain foundational for its generative AI features. Its detailed guidance says there are no special AI files, schema types or separate technical requirements for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Pages still need to be accessible, internally connected, useful and eligible for Search. Google Search Central.

At the same time, fewer searches necessarily become website visits. Pew Research Center analysed 68,879 Google searches from 900 U.S. adults in March 2025. People clicked a conventional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, compared with 15% without one; they clicked a source inside the summary on 1% of visits. The study covers one market and period, so it is evidence of changed behaviour—not a universal forecast for every business. Pew Research Center, 22 July 2025.

My verdict: protect SEO as owned discovery infrastructure, but stop paying for content that has no role beyond producing visits.

The Search-to-Revenue Portfolio

I use five jobs to decide whether an organic-search investment still has commercial value. A page does not need to perform every job, but it should have one clear purpose and a route into the wider customer journey.

Keep the infrastructure that both search experiences need

AI answers do not remove the need for accessible source material. Google advises website owners to preserve crawl access, internal links, page experience, visible text and accurate structured data. OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search and advises publishers not to block OAI-SearchBot if they want content included in summaries and snippets. Google AI features guidance; OpenAI publisher FAQ, checked 14 August 2026.

This is why replacing SEO with a separate “GEO package” can be a false choice. The foundations overlap. The useful change is to move resources from content volume towards clearer business identity, stronger decision pages, original evidence and measurement across search surfaces.

Move from information volume to decision ownership

AI can summarise a generic definition without sending a visitor anywhere. It has a harder time replacing a useful calculator, a documented comparison, a practitioner framework, current proprietary evidence or a provider that can solve the problem.

For ThomPerformance, an article about choosing paid ads or SEO first owns a commercial decision. The Growth Ceiling Diagnostic helps a leader locate a constraint. The AI Citation Readiness System answers a separate question about earning mentions. Each page has a job beyond generating traffic.

Decide what to protect, rebuild, reduce or stop

High traffic produces weak fit and no downstream actionThe topic has attention but little commercial relevanceReduce or repositionFit rate, engaged decision paths and conversion contribution

Pages are inaccessible, vague or unsupportedNeither conventional nor AI search has a strong sourceRepair the foundation firstCrawl access, index status, entity consistency and evidence quality

Do not apply one traffic target to every query. Informational pages, provider comparisons, branded searches and purchase-intent pages behave differently. When the website already attracts visitors but revenue remains flat, use the Traffic-to-Revenue Diagnostic before creating more content.

Assign every priority page one portfolio job. Mark pages with no current audience, evidence or commercial role.

Days 21–40

Protect

Fix access, indexing, internal links and conversion paths for pages closest to demand and revenue.

Days 41–70

Rebuild

Turn three commodity pages into definitive decision assets with original analysis, proof and limitations.

Days 71–90

Reallocate

Move budget from overlapping content into evidence, distribution, conversion and the gaps buyers actually reveal.

Measurement must change with the environment. Google announced dedicated generative-AI visibility reports in Search Console on 3 June 2026, initially for a subset of websites. The reports expose impressions, pages, countries, devices and trends—not revenue. Bing's AI Performance public preview reports citations and cited pages across supported Microsoft AI experiences, while warning that citation count does not represent placement, authority or importance. Google Search Console update; Bing Webmaster Blog, 10 February 2026.

Combine available visibility data with analytics and CRM outcomes. OpenAI adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to ChatGPT search referral URLs, but not every impression becomes a referral. Treat citation and visit data as parts of the journey, then judge whether suitable buyers progress.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO becoming obsolete because of AI search?

No. Google says established SEO foundations remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode, while ChatGPT search still relies on accessible public web sources. What is becoming less valuable is commodity content produced mainly to win informational clicks. SEO remains useful when it makes the business retrievable, credible and helpful during a real buying decision.

Should a business move its SEO budget into GEO?

Not as a simple budget transfer. GEO, or generative engine optimisation, overlaps with useful SEO: accessible pages, clear business identity, original evidence, internal links and authoritative references. Reallocate money away from low-value content volume, but keep the technical, editorial and measurement foundations that both conventional and AI search depend on.

How should a CEO measure SEO when fewer people click search results?

Measure visibility and business movement together: priority-query impressions, AI citations where platforms expose them, branded search, qualified organic visits, assisted enquiries, accepted opportunities and revenue. A falling click-through rate can coexist with stronger market presence, but visibility without suitable buyer action is not enough to justify investment.

Which SEO content is most exposed to AI answers?

Generic definitions, simple summaries and undifferentiated how-to content are most vulnerable because an answer engine can resolve the question without a visit. Pages with original analysis, commercial comparisons, proprietary data, practitioner judgement, tools, proof or a transaction have stronger reasons to be visited and cited.

Should we delete old blog content that no longer drives traffic?

Not automatically. Review whether each page supports a current buyer question, earns links or citations, strengthens a service page, converts suitable visitors or carries historical authority. Improve, consolidate or remove it based on that role. Traffic decline alone does not prove the page has no discovery or decision value.

Keep the discovery system; retire the traffic factory

SEO still matters because businesses need owned pages that can be found, understood, cited and acted upon. The investment case now depends less on publishing volume and more on commercial questions, original evidence and buyer movement. Protect the foundation, rebuild decision assets and stop funding pages with no defensible job.
